Why do so many people ask how many pages are in a book?

Sorry if I sound dumb, but I don’t know what difference it makes unless you’re trying to decide between two books to read for a class assignment and you want the shorter book. If that’s the case, why not just get the unabridged audio version?
For the first 3 people who have answered–all great responses. (Love yours, Jean-Paul!). I hope I get some replies from the younger crowd. Surely they can’t all be that shallow!

lol…i used to be like too….someone asked me to check out a book..i be like, how many pages does it have…lmao like the number of pages will keep me from reading the book.

I would say, this is a good question ! The quality of a book is not in the number of pages. The quality of a book is in its writing style and content. Those who ask for the number of pages are peoples who think of literature as of potatoes.

Teens ask this all the time at the library. I used to try to get them to understand that a thicker book might be much more readable than a thin book, or that the print size made the thin book longer than the thicker one, but it was useless. They still want the thin one. Sigh.

the people that ask that are the ones that hate reading. A book can have 650 pages, as long as its a pleasant read =] thats the way i see it.

Well, I agree with the previous posts, but being of the younger crowd, I think I should chime in.

On the contrary of what others believe, I hate thin books. If there are two books with a good plot, and are the same price, I’d want the thicker one. Heck, I’m not sure if I’d want to buy a thin book if there was a great plot. If I like an adventure, then I want it to last a long time. Also, it’s the long books that keep me from rotting my brain out watching TV.

Goldie, sorry, but I am not in the younger crowd. There have to be many reasons why people would ask how many pages are in a book they might read. They don’t like long winded books, or they do; they have a reason for reading the book, for studies, etc, and have a time limit on when they need to write a report or synopsis of the book; they just want something to read during a trip or on a short vacation, and then there is always that person who loves long books, to get lost in, as an example. But if you add up all of the reasons, it all adds up to a lot of folks who wonder if the story is long or short. These are just a few of the reasons I could come up with, but I didn’t want to bore you.
