For example, I liked the unabridged audiobook version of The Golden Compass http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0807204714/curtissanaemarti/ because they used a full cast of characters to read the book. The listening experience was full and rich.
Another favorite is Prodigal Summer http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0694524379/curtissanaemarti/ read by the author, Barbara Kingsolver. I usually avoid "read by the author" versions like the plague, because authors are usually not good readers. But Kingsolver is very expressive and brought the story to life.
I LOVED Frank Muller’s reading of the Green Mile.. That is my favorite Stephen King book and Frank Muller is my favorite narrator so that was a treat! it’s so sad that Frank ’s lovely voice and style is gone forever because of the accident.
Also Frank Muller’s reading of Comanche Moon, 1984, Cities of the Plains & All The Pretty Horses were fabulous

Okay…this is going to sound cheesy because anyone who knows me knows I tend to read more serious books but……
I love "The Scarlet Feather" by Maeve Binchey
I love to listen to it when I do a long drive like to Maine or Ohio. It takes up the whole trip and the readers voice is so soothing. Oh…and it’s a GREAT story too!

The Alphabet Mysteries (A is for Alibi, S is for Silence…) by Sue Grafton are very good on audiobook. Judy Kaye is pretty phenomenal at her reading, and she just sounds like I would picture Kinsey sounding. She has good inflection, and she does well with changing voices.

I loved all of Kingsolver’s books. Try Poisonwood Bible next. I also really enjoyed listening to Lord of the Rings (all three, always unabridged), because the reader was very expressive and actually sang the parts of the book written in song.

Call me crazy, but I love the Harry Potter books… I like to read the book, then listen to the book in the car… I often pick up on details that I forgot in the book… I also enjoy hearing the way someone else reads the voices and their tones of inflection. With that said, even though the reader of the HP books won awards, I DON’T always think he got certain parts right, but I still enjoy them. I also like Dean Koontz books, but they are better heard (in my opinion) if you haven’t already read the book, as they are truly meant to be suspenseful… takes away from it a bit if I know the ending… Of course, this is all based on IF MY CD PLAYER IS WORKING… a flip of the coin… never know until I jump in the car!

The Run Away Jury. One of John Gresham’s best–and SO funny. The movie just ruined the book for me. Glad I listened to it first!!!

I’ve listened to a bunch of audio books, but my current favorite audio book is whatever I decide to listen to today. I know that sounds cryptic, but I will explain.
The best audio book material is whatever I really *need* to listen to. YAKiToMe! (http://www.yakitome.com) is a free website that converts any electronic text into an audio book podcast. This means I can listen to any content that I can find on the internet or on my hard disk drive.
I’m an engineer and I love being able to use driving time to listen to important technical documents. IMHO, YAK does a very good job with literature and poetry and YAK has a bunch of free classic books to download. But it really shines at reading technical content of my choice. No more radio for me! Check it out.
