Do you think books will become obsolete?

Will they be digital so we can read them on our laptops? Maybe they will be audio so we can listen to them on our ipods while we work.

Do you think we need the smell of the pages? Do you think we need to turn the pages? Maybe we need a cover so we can judge by the cover. Could you do with or without books?

No, they will not, for two reasons.

First, the internet constantly changes. What is there one day is gone the next. Websites are abandoned or not kept updated all the time. Also, if you download a book to your hard drive, the computer may crash, and the HD become totally usesless for recovering information.

Second, even saving books to CD’s is not permanent. CD’s have a limited shelf life. Sure, many are good for 5 to 10 years, but anything can happen to make them unreadable….even just sitting and getting old.

Bound books, on the other hand, can last for centuries. I don’t think modern technology will totally replace the good-ole paper page book.

Although book sales have declined they will not become obsolete. Most people like to curl up in bed with a book or take it on holiday. It’s much more convenient in book form than on a laptop. Also alot of people like something tangible for their money. It is not the same listening to a book as reading it yourself, otherwise audio cd’s of novels would be outselling the books already.

I hope books don’t become obsolete. Yes they already have audio books and books that you can read in your laptops but as for me I still like to snuggle up in my chair with a plain old fashion book and read it that way – no electronics needed!

This question is similar to the idea that was popular in the 80’s, that by the 90’s we would be completely paperless. FYI… we use more paper now than ever before.

Books will never become obsolete. While computers are a great tool for research, nothing compares to a books ability to provide you with the ability to view detailed information in its full context.
