Harry Potter used to be my favorite series until I found God. I found in the bible where it says the things in the book are an abomination to God. I ignored it. I thought there was really no harm in the book it is just a make believe story about wizards. One day I was listening to Harry Potter on audio book and it dawned on me to ask God what he wants me to do. (should have been my first reaction but I was new to all this) He let me know without a doubt that it was not conducive to my relationship with him. I got rid of copies and audio books because it was going to be an obvious stumbling stone for me. Now I need a book to replace it .. one that I love. I have been trying to stick with christian authors so any suggestions would be wonderful.
I tried Frank Peretti and his books scare me to death! I don’t like the demon stuff. I don’t really want anything scary.
WOW – I have no idea people would be so sensitive about a question for a good book. I never asked anyone to not read it or tried to even get anyone to agree with me. I had no idea I would offend anyone or be insulted. I truely appoligize to those I offened and thank those of you who gave suggestions.
The Bible – there is so many out there talking about the Bible without a clue you should learn about what it actually says
C.S. Lewis – Out of the silent planet trilogy
JRR Tolkien – Lord of the Rings (Tolkien was actually one of the people that lead Lewis to Christianity)
Young Pilgrims Progress.
Books by Josh McDowell
There are quite a few books you can read at any Christian bookstore or there is a good selection here
http://family.christianbook.com/?p=1143702&event=ORC.
P.S.
Harry Potter books and the author’s promotion of wicca and witchcraft are clearly the issue with them. On the other hand Pullman’s books should be avoided too as they are written by a man filled with so much arogance and prejudice against Christianity if it was anything else he would have been charged…. besides they stink.
P.S.
Kevin, if you are recommending Dawkins and Hitchens books they aren’t suitable even for toilet paper. I recently paid $1 for the Hitchens book and by the time I got half way through I couldn’t stomach the lies and trash and tossed it in the recycle. They both are intelligent men but when they write about God and Theology they write like an angry teen ager with the underlying theme being I hate my parents…. and the teen could probably write the material better.

The Lord of the Rings is a good start……….
Lots of great Christian undertones in it.
Of course, there’s the Narnia series.
Harry Potter is all about Witchcraft……..stay far from it

Go phillip pullman.
The christians hate it but imo it has some genuine value for the christian religion.
A kind of "christianity gone bad" scenario.

In fact literally anything by C.S. Lewis.
Though I am a tad embarrassed to admit i have to agree with The Sookie Stackehouse novels to.

Try it. I’ll bet you would enjoy writing.
Also, The Chronicles of Narnia are really good.

DONT LISTEN TO ALL THESE NON CHRISTIANS POLLUTING YOUR MIND!!!!! Satan is trying to attack you with wrong answers. This is a very good suggestion for Christians: Witness Lee. You should also read the Bible for a start, but other than that, for entertainment, it is hard to find something suitable. The world is so sinful these days…
There are "children" books, but they are not so suitable, but if you’re willing, try A Hive of Busy Bees, it’s short, though. Oh, and check Witness Lee’s stuff!

ok, the book is giving you trouble as it seems. so, in order to get rid of it, might i be so bold as to suggest the following:
you can either light a fire or wrap fish in it…and if you fan the pages and attach a stick it even makes an ok broom (<- ha, "broom" , harry potter link, innit?)
oh, and just to clarify, by ‘book’ i was referring to the bible.

If even mention of magic is out, then that means you’ll also miss the wonderful Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings, both by Christian authors. I suggest you stick with historical and contemporary fiction.
If a set of children’s novels – obvious fiction about things that DON’T happen and can NEVER happen but with a very Christ-like hero and strong story about the redeeming power of love – are enough to threaten your relationship with God, then that relationship wasn’t much to write home about in the first place, was it?

There are millions of Christians who don’t have a problem with Harry Potter. The woman who writes the books is a Christian. They’re fantasy books that shouldn’t be tossed simply because of some silly notion that they are anti Christian.

I’m glad you’re doing this. Stick to what you know is right. Ignore what people tell you if it goes against what God wants.
Okay, authors, authors…I’m a Christian, and theres a Christian library near me, and one in my church that I go to all the time. I only read Christian books. Is there a Christian library near you?
Hmmm…Tim Lahaye(spelling?), Melody Carlson, and I just recently discovered Terri Blackstock. Her books are mysteries, and I love them.

Look at the way you asked your simple question. Why couldn’t you just ask "Does anyone know a good book I should read that has Christian foundation?"
If you were to ask it like that then no one would give you shit for it. You asked for the answers you received by putting your beliefs into a question that did not need them.

I would get any book by Lori Wick. She IS a christian author.None of her books are scary or about demons or anything.Pretense is a great book. Its a fiction book about a wife and her relationship with God.I agree with you though. People shouldn’t act rude and you didn’t tell them not to read it so you shouldn’t apologize to them.It makes me mad when people go and make fun of our religion because we don’t go and make fun of theres.
