I want to buy the audiobook for "Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin", but it’s abridged. Unfortunately, there is no unabridged audio version of this book available. I really want to listen to the book while I’m driving back to school, but I don’t want to listen to an abridged version if it leaves out a lot of content from the original version. I would rather wait and read it this summer if the audio version is excessively watered down. Does anybody know how different the audiobook is from the original?
This is a response to the first person who answered this question: the author is the narrator of the audiobook so I don’t think she has a problem with taking out some things.
I would never listen to an abridged version of anything. It just seems like an insult to the author.
Just got into the world of audio books but not sure is best to download( for ipod) "unabridge" books or books that have nothing next to them as there’s a price difference.
Unabridged is the complete original, uncut.
A lot of audiobooks cover the main points of the book. If you want the entire book, be sure it says unabridged.
hello, i am seeking either abridged or unabridged audio books particular titles please that are not over ‘pg-13 ‘ in other words. no steamy, sexy or numerous swear words too. i am driving cross country with my annoyingly conservative & prude birth mother and i think audio books would be a swell idea and ideal ice breaker since my mother and i have very little in common. if only i could find audio books that we both could possibly like listening to, are there any you can think of ? to help give you an idea of my taste in books as well as my mother’s which most likely will help in recommending titles of certain audio books to me I’ll first list my favorite authors and than hers:
my favorite authors: Arundhati Roy, Jeanette Walls ,Conrad Aiken, Virginia Wolfe ,Zora Neal Hurston & J.D.Salinger
:Amy Tan, Azar Nafisi, Azadeh Moaveni, Carey Goldberg, Neil LaBute, Moss Hart & Tennessee Williams
in advance, thank you very much to all who provide helpful, caring and practical answers!
Have you checked with you local public library? The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has what seems to be thousands of titles. I understand that it doesn’t help you, but your local or county library may be able to help you, even if they do not have them in their collection. There may be something available through inter-library loan. All you can do is ask. The worst they can do is say, "No."
I would search audible. com by the authors you have selected or amazon.com, using the same technique. Chances are if it’s available in one format, it’s available in another that is compatible with your system. But even if you need to pay overdue fines, you’re probably going to be ahead over buying them. You may also be able to buy used ones through eBay. You can also sell your own books on disk there when you are finished with them. There are also rental services on the Internet. The advantage is that if you’re willing to pay a modest amount, you can get a much larger variety. No, I don’t have any sources, but if you Google it, you can likely find a bunch of places.
Also, please keep in mind that you may be willing to hear something that your mother would pick that you wouldn’t necessarily want to hear. My experience is that, particularly with non-fiction material, I will listen longer to some material than I would read if it was in print. Think of it as eating food that she would prefer; it is, after all, a matter of taste.
I use audible.com to download books onto my iPod. I have always been quite satisfied with their service, and they have a wide variety of titles. They are a subsidiary of Amazon. I have an adapter that will convert the MP3 player to a disk player. I got it at Radio Shack. No disks to shuffle, and it eliminates carrying stacks of disks with you.
8 hrs 15 minutes according to the local library catalog
For example, I liked the unabridged audiobook version of The Golden Compass http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0807204714/curtissanaemarti/ because they used a full cast of characters to read the book. The listening experience was full and rich.
Another favorite is Prodigal Summer http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0694524379/curtissanaemarti/ read by the author, Barbara Kingsolver. I usually avoid "read by the author" versions like the plague, because authors are usually not good readers. But Kingsolver is very expressive and brought the story to life.
I LOVED Frank Muller’s reading of the Green Mile.. That is my favorite Stephen King book and Frank Muller is my favorite narrator so that was a treat! it’s so sad that Frank ’s lovely voice and style is gone forever because of the accident.
Also Frank Muller’s reading of Comanche Moon, 1984, Cities of the Plains & All The Pretty Horses were fabulous
I had a tough time finding these audio books on CD. Has anyone found them anywhere? Books 1,2 &3 unabridged is what I’m after.
Yes, that is where I picked them up for $50 per audio book for my wife. Each book is 8 cd’s. When I got them, they came looking like someone made them in their home. Literally bootleg type quality. The CD’s do not have the proper ID3 tags so it gets confusing with all the CD’s while you are listening.
Not complaining, but was surprised to see a best selling book that had nicely presented audio books on tape, would resort to sort of non-asuming, and rather cheaply done materials.
Other than that, the set is perfect, with all the material there, ready to rip onto my ipod.
I don’t know how much you are willing to pay but all three are listed here – unabridged

okay. so my teacher gave us a summer reading project for college prep next year. she gave us the unabridged book of dracula (bram stoker) but i bought the abridged audio book of it. we are supposed to have a test on the first day of school on the book. if i listened to the abridged version is there a possibility my grade will be lower than reading the unabridged version? are the 2 really that different?
There is a large possibility, yes.
The abridged version of Dracula is so much shorter than the unabridged. You might miss key details that the quiz will ask about.
Unabridged narrated by Richard Matthews OR
Unabridged narrated by John Lee?
The Richard Matthews one is better.
I have had trouble reading this book, which is something I am supposed to be reading for English class. This is why I have decided to get the audio book off of iTunes to help me out. I only have one problem deciding — should I get the abridged (shortened) version, or the unabridged (full) version. In class, we have skimmed through some parts of each chapter. Do you think that the abridged version will cut important details out, or will it just be simpler and cut unnecessary and repetitive minutaies out of the book?
Thank you ![]()
get the full version, you may have missed something
