Well, I pretty much use ITunes for everything. You can buy them from there, but they generally run around 10ish dollars, sometimes more. Often they are almost the same price as the "real" book. But many times people will make podcasts through Itunes that are readings of the books, and those are free. That is how I got Northanger Abbey.

Nurism is right. Is free cheap enough for you if not podiobooks.com takes donations but doesn’t require spending money.
I down load books through itunes in podcast form you can also download from podiobooks.com you can also link to the author’s websites from there sometimes the authors have a rants feed that has the same story with rants and author’s notes.
Here is a link to a free trial of audible.com from the starship sofa. Remember to cancel after you get you book if you don’t wish to buy more.
You should also check out Star Ship Sofa, clonepod, and Escapepod
There is so much available I would have to know what types of books and short stories you like to give a better list of podcasts and audio books
Also most public libraries have books on CD, free if not returned late.

Start with your local library – most offer audiobooks and many even have download services available.
I get mine through an Internet Relay Chat room (www.mIRC.com) and there is pretty much everything available there. Download the application and run it – look for a room called #audiobooks and you can download to your hearts’ content. You will have about 1 month free on mIRC and will then have to subscribe, but you can usually find serial numbers for this. I have downloaded (and also share) probably about 500 GB of audiobooks – everything from classics to newly released titles.
E-mail me if you have any more questions about this. Good luck.

YAKiToMe! http://www.yakitome.com is a free website that lets you turn any electronic text into an audio book. It reads in various languages with regionally accented voices. Output is an mp3 that you can download, share, and podcast.
You can get free books in electronic text format to feed to YAKiToMe! at Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org.
